In my first run of this blog on the Louisville Mojo website between 2009 and 2012, I pulled no punches. I was critical and I think that I definitely instigated drama because I stood for my view of how things should be.
Mind you, I kind of enjoyed researching different subjects and issues, and that I attracted the ire of the Yaldos, the Michigan-based family who still own the "Budgetel" formerly called the Economy Inn. While I give far more credit to Steve Magre and Patrick Carrico for pushing reform of the aged hotel, I would like to think I was a small part of the change through the blog by demonstrating how the edifice was way beyond its normal life cycle.
When I resurrected the Bon Air Observer Blog in January 2019, I decided that it was going to be a kinder, gentler blog that sought to be positive and informative and reflect the agenda of the Bon Air Neighborhood Association.
I may look like I am breaking from that niceness and stepping on some toes with this post. Apologies in advance, but I am reporting some facts.
However, first, I wish to grieve that the Highgate Springs sign was recently taken. Raymond Fehr, who has been President of Highgate Springs Neighborhood Association, suggested on Facebook that scrappers took it. I agree with his suggestion. I am hoping that the scrappers are caught.
The sign definitely added a touch of class to the Furman/Taylorsville Road intersection.
Now it is gone, and now, the Highgate Springs Neighborhood Association is officially dissolved too. That is too bad, but maybe it is time for a new beginning.

In light of these two realities, I would like to make two suggestions.
First, Merge the remnant of the Highgate Springs Association into the Bon Air Neighborhood Association. BANA's bylaws were already changed in April 2019 to revise who can be a member and the hard boundaries set by the now-defunct Department of Neighborhoods were effaced.
Second, I suggest that we build a different sign at the intersection of Kings Highway and Furman that includes a brick base like this one on the island at 4200 Norbourne Blvd in St Matthews.
I think that this construction would still be aesthetically pleasing, more permanent, and less likely to be stolen by scrappers. This intersection south of the site of the old sign would be a safer site.
That being said, I welcome the people in the area that had been part of the Highgate Springs Neighborhood Association's district to join the Bon Air Neighborhood Association. After all, when you look at the Encyclopedia of Louisville, Bon Air historically has the following boundaries:
- Furman on the east
- Hikes Lane on the south
- Bardstown Road on the west
- The Watterson Expressway/Taylorsville Road on the north.
I think that together we can do some great things in the future and we would love to have you join us.
The next meeting of the Bon Air Neighborhood Association will be Monday, January 10, 2022, in the Bon Air Library meeting room at 6:30 pm.
